The current translation is by Georg Steinhauser, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Institut für Radioökologie und Strahlenschutz, Hannover, Germany; steinhauser@irs.uni-hannover.de. An attempt has been made to preserve Hahn’s and Strassmann’s writing style as much as possible. However, scientific German often uses the passive voice which is not always translated properly to English. Also the typically long German sentences sometimes had to be shortened for better English style. The references were converted to EPJH style, and the footnotes are numbered consecutively.
